ATLANTA, GA — Reveam, Inc., a leader in electron beam and X-ray technology solutions for food, agriculture and supply chain applications, today announced that Chip Starns, Founder, Chief Regulatory Officer and Executive Vice President, has been appointed to the American Nuclear Society’s Rapid Response Taskforce expert group focused on the sterile insect technique and radiation-based control of the New World screwworm.
The taskforce brings together leading experts in nuclear science, radiation processing, entomology, isotope supply, irradiation systems, regulatory affairs and agricultural pest control to support rapid response efforts following the confirmation of New World screwworm in U.S. livestock.
New World screwworm is a destructive parasitic pest that can affect livestock, wildlife, pets and, less commonly, people. Its reemergence in the United States has intensified the need for proven, scalable tools to support containment, eradication and long-term prevention. The sterile insect technique, which uses radiation to sterilize insects before release, has played a central role in prior eradication efforts and remains a critical component of current response strategies.
Starns brings extensive experience in electron beam, X-ray and radiation processing applications. At Reveam, he helps lead regulatory and technical strategy for the company’s USDA-certified commercial electron beam phytosanitary facility in South Texas, located near the USDA Mexican fruit fly sterile insect technique facility. His appointment reflects both his deep technical expertise and Reveam’s commitment to applying advanced irradiation technologies to urgent agricultural and biosecurity challenges.
In addition to his role at Reveam, Starns is a former president of the Council on Ionizing Radiation Measurements and Standards (CIRMS), a recipient of the organization’s Randall S. Caswell Award, and a member of the ASTM Radiation Processing Committee. His experience includes commercial operations, regulatory frameworks and standards development for technologies that can support food safety, phytosanitary treatment and pest-control programs.
