Food Safety and Waste
Every year, an estimated 600 million people – almost 1 in 10 people in the world – fall ill after eating contaminated food. Contaminated products become the burden of retailers and food service providers, who must bear the expense and brand liability associated with recalls and lawsuits. The Food Safety Modernization Act only increases liabilities associated with pathogen outbreaks.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that approximately one-third of all food produced in the world is lost or wasted each year due to pests, insects, bacteria and fungi. These losses are a result of ineffective food treatment methods and inefficiencies in the food supply chain. Current post-harvest treatment methods such as chemical fumigation and hot water treatment take hours to treat a truckload, while also warming produce to undesirable temperatures. These inferior treatment methods cause vast quantities of safe food to spoil, creating billions of dollars in unrecoverable costs due to product shrink.
